How Do You Make Chocolate Buttercream Icing?
While the basic buttercream recipe is delicious, sometimes you need a little bit more. Chocolate buttercream is the ultimate in decadence and is delicious on just about any cake, cupcake, or sugar cookie. It is also great under fondant, and looks beautiful when spread with a knife or piped onto a cake. Cream butter and shortening. Take your butter out of the refrigerator a little before you make the frosting, so that it is slightly softened. Add the butter and shortening to your bowl and cream with a stand mixer, or any other electric mixer. Add the dry ingredients. Slowly incorporate your confectioners sugar and cocoa powder. You should sift these, although it is not necessary. It is best to add them 1/2 c or 3/4 c at a time and slowly incorporate them. Add the wet ingredients. Once all of your dry ingredients are incorporated, add your milk and vanilla extract. Blend 1-1 1/2 minutes or until light and fluffy.
