How Do You Make Buttercream Icing For Cakes?
Smores are a delicious bonfire treat, but you can also make them indoors with much less mess. Ditch the roasting stick, crank up the microwave and you can have warm smores in 15 seconds or less. Use a mixer to blend shortening, water and vanilla flavoring in a bowl until creamy. Turn off mixer and use a spatula to scrape the sides of the bowl clean. Then briefly turn on the mixer again to thoroughly blend the mixture. Measure the powdered sugar, meringue powder and salt (if desired) into a second bowl and mix slightly by hand. Pour about half of the sugar mixture into the shortening mixture and blend until creamy. Repeat with remaining sugar mixture, scraping the sides of the bowl frequently. Test icing for proper consistency by inserting a spatula and swirling it slightly as you pull it out. This will form mounds and peaks within the icing. When the peaks bend slightly, the buttercream has reached a medium consistency-the easiest for icing a cake. Adjust icing consistency as needed. I
