Although making a belly dance costume is fun, it requires a lot of work and time to make it look beautiful. The good news is, you can start out with just a basic costume and keep embellishing it as you have time and materials. The first thing you’ll want to do is look around at belly dance costumes, both in person and on the internet and get an idea about what kind of costume you’d like to have. If you have friends or acquaintances who belly dance, ask them about their costumes and what they love, and what they wish they’d done differently. Decide on a color scheme. This is important because it will dictate your choice of fabric, trim and accessories. Decide on whether you want a beaded or coin bra and belt (the beaded requires much more work, time and materials). Choose and buy your trim first, because you will have much more selection in fabric than trims, so it’s easier to match fabric to trim than vice-versa. You’ll need a lot more trim than you think; 15-18 yards is not too much!
