How Do You Make An Oil And Wax Based Artist Paint Medium?
This oil and wax medium replaces the oil in the recipe for basic oil paint. Due to the additional step of making this medium it adds a little time to making your oil paint. You can make enough of this recipe to last several weeks (which is the approximate shelf-life) and use it as needed to replace the oil in the basic recipe for artist’s oil paint. This recipe yields 1 quart of a 2% wax mixture, which should be enough for approximately 25 tubes of paint. Warm 8 oz. (240ml.) of the oil in a double boiler or on a hot plate over low heat. Crumble the beeswax into the oil, stirring constantly. Continue stirring just until melted. As soon as the beeswax has melted into the oil remove the pot from the heat. Allow the oil/wax mixture to cool to room temperature. Slowly stir the remaining oil into the mix. If you will not be using this mixture immediately to make paint you will want store it in labeled jars.
