How Do You Make An Herbal Oil Infusion?
Herbal oil infusions are used externally. They can be used in place of lotions, conditioners and ointments. They can also be thickened and made into balms and salves. Infusion oil with herbs is a great way to get the medicinal plant properties and aromas into the oil without a distiller. Chop 3/4 cup fresh herb or 1/8 cup dried herb. Finely chopping the herb will facilitate infusion of the plants properties into the oil. Place 1/8 cup dried plant material or 3/4 cup fresh herb into a sterile 1 pint mason jar. Add 1 cup of olive oil. Seal the jar with a lid. Label the herbal contents and the date. Place the jar in a sunny location for 10 days. Shake daily. After 10 days, strain the plant material from the infused oil. Cheesecloth or a colander (strainer) with a coffee filter works well for this. Place the infused oil in a dark jar. Label with the herbal contents and the date of preparation. Use within one year of infusing the herbs into the oil.
