Tortilla presses can be made out of plastic, wood, metal or many other materials. The press is used to prepare tortillas by flattening the tortilla dough. In Mexico, traditions and even some legends surround the preparation of tortillas. Tortilla dough can be made out of flour, potatoes or corn. The filling usually consists of beef, chicken, pork or vegetables. Cut the pine board into six pieces with the following measurements: 11-1/4 inches (A), 9-5/8 inches (B), 1-1/2 inches (C), 3/4-inches (D), and two pieces 2-1/4 inches by 1 inch(E). Reduce the dowel to 9 inches. Glue and clamp C to A, lining up the edges. This will serve for the base of the press. Do the same with D to B. This piece will serve as the top. Make sure piece D interacts with the arm to create the pressure required to squeeze the tortilla. Place the small pieces E on either side on the dowel. It may be helpful to clamp this unit together.
