How Do You Make A Whirligig Spin?
Whirligigs come in many different types. Conical whirligigs hang from a single point and spin from passing breezes. These are often found on porches. Rooftop whirligigs are mounted to prominent posts or atop roofs and have propeller-type arms that spin with the wind. Circular whirligigs are designed to be played with and they spin when a person pulls on their strings. Select a small disposable plate, the size used for dessert servings. Cut off the lip of the plate using scissors until you have a circle approximately 4 inches across. Punch two holes in the center of the disposable plate 1/2-inch apart. Measure and cut 2 1/2 feet of string. Thread the string through one hole and out the other and tie the ends of the string together. You have made a whirligig. Slide the disc to the center of the strings and hold the ends of the strings in each hand, between the thumb and fingers.
