The Log Cabin quilt design is one of the most popular of all, and dates back to the early 19th century. The center square of each block is usually red and is said to represent the hearth of the log cabin home. The rectangular strips around the center represent the logs. The light-colored rectangles represent the joyous times in life, and the dark rectangles represent the sad times. Every home has its share of both. Cut dark, light, and red center fabric into 2 1/2-inch strips across the width of the fabric (selvage edge to selvage). Cut one strip from center fabric, 18 light strips and 22 dark strips. Cut eight strips from each of the border fabrics in the following widths: three inches for the first border, four inches for the second border, and five inches for the third.
