The best way to make a turtle shell at home is with a simple cardboard box and a paper mache.

  1. Cut the cardboard box into two large circles that are larger than your back. Curve one of the circles and attach it to the flat one giving the "shell" a 3D appearance.
  2. Take your paper mache mixture and apply a few coats of paper mache to the shell of your turtle shell. Make sure to cover all surfaces of the turtle shell, even the area where the two cardboard circles do not meet up. You want to make it look as life-like and 3D as possible.
  3. Let your turtle shell dry completely.
  4. Apply some paint in a turtle shell pattern on the turtle shell to match your costume. Use green, brown, and yellow paint.
  5. To be able to wear the turtle shell, make sure to add some ribbons or robe to make the shell like a backpack. This way you can remove the shell if you get uncomfortable.

Most of a turtle costume is taken care of by buying a green sweatsuit. That leaves you with the task of creating the carapace. Choose from several different methods to make a turtle shell that’s easy for your child and looks amazing when worn. Find a large basin that’s ovular and the right size for the wearer of the costume. Coat the bottom of it in cooking oil to prevent the papier mache from sticking to it. Mix 1 cup flour with 1 1/3 cup water and 1 tsp. salt to make a paste. Rip newspaper into 1-inch long strips. One at a time, coat the paper with paste and lay it to cover the bottom of the basin. Using a crisscross pattern makes the shell stronger. Smooth out any excess glue, using a large paintbrush. Allow it to dry at least overnight. Carefully take the papier mache shell off the basin. Coat the shell with white paint and let it dry. Paint both sides of the shell green. When the green paint dries, add decorations, such as spots, with another shade of green to look like a turtle s
