Purchase upholstery fabrics because your tote bag will be nice and durable and pretty at the same time. You will want to select two coordinating pieces of fabric, one for the outside of the bag and on for the lining. Poster board is a great pattern piece for a tote bag. Choose the size poster board for the size bag you would like. Cut out your tote bag. Lay fabric out on flat surface with right side up. Your fabric should be doubled, the same way it comes on the bolt. Lay your pattern piece (poster board) on top. If you are using a cutter, hold the pattern piece with one hand and cut with the other.
