How Do You Make A Tortilla Press?
Freshly-made corn tortillas are a delicious epicurean experience and a tasty complement to many main courses. The dough is easy to prepare and can be pressed by hand or with a rolling pin, but it’s faster and easier with a tortilla press, or “tortilladoro.” You could buy a cast iron or electric tortilla press, but a simple wooden homemade tortilla press will work just as well and is easy to complete in a couple of hours. Sand all edges of all pieces until smooth. Rub mineral oil into the two 11×11 pieces with a clean, soft cotton cloth or paper towel. Place the 11 x 11s on top of one another and attach the two hinges along the left side. With the unfinished press still closed, measure 1 inch from the right side and place the 11 x 3/4 piece on the mark, parallel to the hinges. Glue it in place and clamp until dry (about an hour). Assemble the arm unit in two steps. First, glue the 1 1/2 x 3/4 piece in between the two 2 1/4 x 1 pieces, with the bottom edges of all three pieces even with
