Center the round foam ball over the end of the dowel or stick; push down onto the dowel. Push the ball far enough down that it will not come loose, but do not push so far that the dowel comes out the top of the ball. Remove the ball from the dowel. Set the foam ball in a small bowl. The bowl should be smaller than the ball, so that the ball just rests on its rim. This will stabilize the ball so that it won’t roll while you work on it.
