The stupa is a major symbol in Buddhism. Legends and lore abound on the specific symbolism of the stupa; it is a building style and a guideline for shrine creation, and some say the stupa represents certain elements of the Buddha directly. However, the agreed fundamental symbolism of the stupa is in five parts representing five elements. Here’s the basic idea you would use to construct, draw or otherwise represent a stupa. Draw or construct a square base. This represents the element of earth. Add a circular shape on top of the square. This represents the element of water. Put a triangle directly atop the circle. This represents the element of fire. Make a crescent on top of the triangle, balanced perfectly, lying with its rounded side down against the point of the triangle.
