How Do You Make A Spokeshave?
Woodworking was more than a hobby for the early settlers of the New World–learning to work with wood was necessary because they had to make a large percentage of the tools, furniture, and implements that they used. Wagon wheel spokes and tool handles and other convex and concave wood shapes required a special tool called a spokeshave, a kind of plane. There are many steps involved in making a homemade spokeshave but the satisfaction of working wood with a tool that you made yourself is worth the time and effort required. Step 1 Select a piece of hardwood for the wooden part of the spokeshave. Cut the wood to a piece approximately 11″ long x 1″ thick x 1ΒΌ” wide. Find and mark the center of the block of wood with an arrow pointing to what will be the front of the shave. Strike a line 3/8″ from the rear of the block running the length of the block.
