Learning about the photoelectric effect with a small solar cell is something that helps kids understand a number of scientific principles as well as understand more about going green. Cut a piece of the copper flashing about the same size as the burner on your hotplate using shears. Wash your hands and scrub the copper sheet to get any oil or grease off and dry it. Sand the copper sheet to remove any corrosion. Put the sheet of copper flashing directly on the burner of an 1100-watt electric hotplate. Turn the burner to the highest setting, and leave the copper on it for about 1/2 hour. When it’s done there should be a thick coating of black over the copper sheet. Leave the copper sheet on the burner when you turn it off and let them cool down together. After about 20 minutes the sheet should be cooled to room temperature. Use your hands to scrub it lightly under runni
