Seashell necklaces can be made with natural shells, or by using manufactured replicas. Shells used in jewelry making need to be sturdy enough to withstand a small power drill bit. The drill bit should range in size from 1/64″ to 1/8″, depending upon the size of the shell used. Consider the weight of the shells when selecting pieces for jewelry making. Shell necklaces can also be adorned with traditional beads, sea glass, or shark’s teeth. Select seashells for the project. Gather extra shells in case of cracking during the drilling process. Design the necklace before drilling the shells. Lay shells in a necklace shape and photograph the pattern for reference. Drill a hole in each shell with a small drill bit. Shells may crack under the pressure of the power drill. Use a 1/64″ drill bit for small to medium shells. Use 1/8″ drill bit for larger shells. Cut jewelry wire to desired necklace length.
