How do you make a Salty Dog?
Obviously, you were listening to the heated debate that a few former co-workers and I were having a couple of days ago. One of us was convinced that a Salty dog was made with gin while the rest of us were convinced that it was made with vodka. This lead me to do a little research. I knew that it was made with vodka and I had a basis for my argument. A Salty Dog is a derivative of a drink called a Greyhound. To make a Salty Dog, salt the rim of the glass and then proceed with the Greyhound recipe. So, what’s in a Greyhound? A standard Greyhound consists of 1 1/2 ounces of vodka and 5 ounces of grapefruit juice. Pour the ingredients into a large rocks glass filled with ice and stir. I usually serve Salty Dogs up which means that I’ll salt the rim of a martini glass and strain the chilled ingredients into it.
