How Do You Make A Roman Shade?
Roman shades are a nice way to cover a window opening. They do not require a lot of special hardware and can be made by novices. The basic idea is loops sewn to the back of a shade. Cords are passed through those loops in such a way that when pulled, the flat sheet of material will fold up and out of the way, allowing light to enter. • Cut a length of 1×1 wood to fit across the inside top of the window opening. Screw or otherwise provide for attaching the 1×1 to the window frame. (You cannot inside-mount on French doors.) • Select your fabric and lining material. While these can be made with light weight materials, decorator weight is ideal. (about the weight of a table cloth or a pair of chino’s for those unfamiliar with fabric “weight”) • Cut the fabrics to the size of the window opening, plus an inch in both height and width to allow for seam allowances. • Pin both layers together, with printed or “right” sides facing. • Sew around the perimeter, leaving several inches open for turn
Roman shades are a classic window treatment that you can make in just a few hours. Choose coordinating fabric to match your existing decor, and let the window frame your fabric by mounting the roman shade on the inside of the frame. Making the Roman Shade Step 1 Measure the width and the height of the window. Measure the width of the window at different locations and use the measurement that is the smallest. Step 2 Purchase enough fabric and lining to cover your window. Add 1 3/4 inches to the width of your window and 4 3/4 inches to the length. Cut your purchased fabric to these dimensions. Step 3 Lay your roman shade face down and center the lining on the fabric. The fabric should be a 1/2 inch wider than the lining on both sides. Step 4 Place the right sides of your fabric and lining together, stitch the right and left side raw edges together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance and press both of the seams open. Step 5 Stitch the top edge of the roman shade together with a 1/2 inch seam
