Making a rock tumbler is a moderately easy task, and it requires the use of power tools and the ability to lift at least 10 pounds. How to Make a Rock Tumbler Step 1 Place a paint can or coffee can sideways on the piece of scrap wood. Mark the wood just under the base of the can to designate the spot for the wheel mechanism position. The can must rest firmly on the wheels. Place two wheels on either side of the can. Position wheels 1 inch to the center from each end of the can. Step 2 Turn the furniture wheel upside down, and screw the attached metal brackets to the scrap piece of wood.
