Depending on where you live, you may call this type of sandwich a sub or a hoagie. Growing up in Connecticut we called them a grinder and they were always considered a treat. Like any sandwich, there are many different ingredients you can substitute to make your favorite grinder. Slice the bread lengthwise. Drizzle both sides of the bread with olive oil. Placed shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, roast beef and provolone cheese on the bread. Place the grinders on a cookie sheet and place under the broiler until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted. The Grinders can be served with many different side dishes, but potato chips were always my favorite. If you don’t like roast beef, you can replace it with ham, turkey, salami, pepperoni or even tuna salad. Another favorite is to replace the olive oil with mustard and replace the roast beef with pastrami. For a real Italian treat, make a meatball grinder. Place a little sauce on each side of the bread.
