A brick patio is a great investment, because it can increase the value of your home. You can build a brick patio on a sand foundation with sand filling the cracks, but it won’t be very strong and can be disrupted easily. If you build your patio with cement or mortar rather than sand, it will last longer and look better. Mark the area for your patio. A square or rectangle shape will make it easier to lay the bricks. Measure the area and determine how many bricks you will need. The standard size for many patio bricks is 4 by 8 by 2 inches. Normally patios have a border created by standing bricks on their sides, thus creating a 2-inch border. Dig out the area about 6 inches deep. Be sure the area is level.
