A shaker is a hand-held instrument that adds the essence of percussion with just a little shake. Shakers are one of the easiest homemade musical instruments you can make. The materials are easy to come by and can be substituted out with many different things. You can use virtually any container as long as it has a lid, and that goes for what you fill the shaker with as well. Rice, coins, beads, marbles, and even dried pasta can all be used. Various containers include tin cans, coffee cans, empty film canisters, empty plastic Easter eggs, glass jars, etc. Decorate a small plastic container using multicolored permanent markers. You can use any plastic container, such as small Tupperware or empty bottles. Create a pattern with hearts, stars, polka dots, music notes, etc. Allow the markers to dry to avoid smearing.
