If rocks deep inside the surface of the earth become extremely hot, they begin to melt. Once melted, they become magma and have less density than surrounding rocks. At that point, this starts to flow and rise toward the surface. If it collects steam and gas, this will cause expansion and an eruption. When the top of a volcano has exploded, it causes a hole in the surface called the caldera. Reproducing the act of a volcanic eruption can be done at home with modeling clay, simple ingredients and paint. Locate an open work area to begin production on your volcano. You will want a space that is available for any messes that can occur. Spread out your newspapers and place your cookie sheet on top. This will be the base for your volcano.
