How Do You Make A Magnet Spin?
You can make your own magnet and make it spin with just a few items. This intriguing device is the exact opposite of an electric generator; it is a simple electric motor. In the following activity, not only will you be making this simple machine, you will actually make the magnet that spins. Make 10 loops around a AAA battery with magnet wire (available at electronic supply stores), leaving about 2 inches of wire hanging off both ends of the battery. Remove the coil you have made carefully so that it does not come apart. Tie the coil together where the ends stick out. The ends should come straight out of the left and right sides of the coil, making the axis that this electromagnet will spin on. Use a sharp utility knife to strip off the top half of the covering of both the left and right ends of the wire that make the axis.
