Macrame as a craft is increasing in popularity again after a lull in the interest of the art. During the 60’s and 70’s, Macrame had almost as large a following as crochet or quilting. Many are returning to the craft as new and unique designs are created. A macrame key chain is not a new design; however, it is a quick and easy project for a beginner. Cut the cord into two 16-inch lengths. Fold both cords in half and pull through the key ring. You should have four lengths hanging from the key ring in approximately equal lengths. Make a square knot using the two outside cords, over the two middle cords. See image. Tighten the knot up against the key ring. Repeat step 3 until you reach the desired length for your key chain.
