Argo brand of corn starch effectively stiffens clothes after laundering. One problem encountered with homemade laundry starch, however, is the lumping which occurs from improperly made solutions. The secret to making a lump-free starch lies in the preparation method. Correctly done, you will have a low-cost way to make your clothes look sharp. Add the cornstarch to the bottom of the bucket or bowl. Pour ΒΌ cup of cold water over the cornstarch while stirring the mixture with a whisk. Bring to a boil one quart of water to make heavy starch, two quarts for medium starch, or three quarts of water for a light starch. Whisk boiling water into the bucket with the cornstarch and cold water, stirring until clear and combined. Submerge an article of clothing into the bucket and hang to dry to stiffen the material and, optionally, iron the item to straighten out wrinkles.
