A loft can be a great place to store your sports equipment. However, getting up to your loft can be difficult to do if you don’t have a good ladder. If you have a loft that you want to use and need a ladder, then you can make your own custom ladder using a few pieces of lumber, some deck screws and a little elbow grease. Step 1 Measure the distance from the ground floor to the loft and add twelve inches. This will be the length of your ladder beams. Cut out two ladder beams from 2X4 lumber pieces. Step 2 Cut out the rungs for your loft ladder. To do this you will need to first determine how many rungs you will need by dividing the total length of your ladder beams by ten inches. Round this number down and this will be the number of rungs you will need. Cut the rungs from a 2X4 piece of lumber in 18 inch segments.
