Large Chinese lanterns can add a bold statement to your decorating scheme and are useful for many occasions, such as outdoor get-togethers, holiday gatherings and New Year’s celebrations. Make a large Chinese lantern the centerpiece of your next buffet table, or hang several from the ceiling to add a warm glow and festive touch to a room. It is not any more difficult to make a large Chinese lantern than it is to make a small one; it only requires a little more time and materials. Cut the butcher paper into rectangles that measure 24 inches by 48 inches, or for a smaller lantern, 18 inches by 36 inches. Each sheet of paper will make one large Chinese lantern. Cut another strip of paper for the handle, measuring 12 inches by 1½ inches. Decorate one side of the paper with a pattern of Chinese calligraphy or good luck symbols, or paint a scene with watercolors depicting cherry trees, mountains or birds. Since this is a large lantern, you have plenty of space to make a fully developed scene
