A wood lamp shade is a great way to add atmosphere to a den or sunroom. For a table tamp, a four-sided lamp shade works best, and is probably the easiest to build. Square lamp shades are little more than an open-ended box, and can be designed and built with a relatively basic set of equipment. While a do-it-yourself lamp shade may not be dramatically less expensive than a store-bought one, the personal satisfaction that comes with building your own furniture accessories often is the best reward. Step 1 Choose one side of the shingles to be the outer face, and place them with that side down. Sand the upward face of the panels until they are smooth. Step 2 Choose one edge of each shingle to be the “up” side, which will form the top edge of the lamp shade. For the best results, keep the thickest edge toward the top.
