How Do You Make A Hunting Bow From Oak?
Crafting your very own hunting bow is a rite of passage for many outdoorsy types who enjoy hunting and camping. There is nothing quite like the sense of accomplishment from making your own hunting tool and using it in the wild to track down your prey. One of the strongest types of wood to make your bow out of is oak. Step 1 Locate an oak sapling that is at least 4 feet long. Saplings of this length usually have the right thickness to be sturdy and still flexible. Step 2 Take a sharp knife or other cutting tool and carefully cut away all the branches and bark from the sapling. Step 3 Whittle the oak sapling into the shape of a bow staff. You won’t need to cut anything off the middle of the bow staff, but you will need to cut the ends of the staff down to at least a half inch in diameter in order to really give it an authentic look.
