How Do You Make A Homemade Upholstered Headboard 5 Inches Thick?

If you want it 5 inches thick then you need at least 5 inches of padding. I would suggest foam rubber or something similar. I don’t think conventional batting would work too well in that thickness. If you were to get a piece of plywood (4′ x 8′) and have it cut to the size you want (the lumber yard will usually do the cutting for you for a very reasonable rate -$0.25 or so per cut). The staple or use brads to hold the fabric onto the back on one end you could then proceed to attach the fabric to the other sides and end. At the same time you need to put the “buttons” in through the front into the plywood. I am not sure what you would want to use for the front. I would look at the fabric store for some premade ones, rather than try to make something strong enough on your own. But if you do try to make them on your own, use screws not nails.
