Popularized in America by martial arts films, cartoons and books, throwing stars–or “shuriken” ninja stars–have achieved legendary status among thrown projectile weapons. Literally meaning “sword hidden in the hand” in Japanese, shuriken are traditional weapona used for urban combat. While considered a secondary or supplemental weapon compared with a swordsman’s katana, throwing stars can inflict considerable damage. With basic power tools, anyone can create an arsenal of throwing stars. Designate a working surface for the cutting and sharpening of your throwing star. Clean the area and plug in the power tools. Place the steel plate on your working surface and, using a pencil, design your throwing star. For beginner stars, a basic four-pointed shuriken style is an effective shape.
