Select a piece of wood or stone close to the size you would like for the finished hook. Wash it and let it air dry for a full day. Put on a pair of gloves to protect your hands. Determine the exact shape you would like the hook to be. Hawaiian fishing hooks all have the same general shape but you can vary them slightly if you would like. Carve at the bone or wood and begin shaping the curved end. Use quick, short strokes. As the curve forms, sand it with the sandpaper every so often, then wipe it off with a rag. Carve as far as you can to achieve the inner curve of the hook, then use sandpaper to get deeper inside the curve
