By making your own hanging lamps, you can combine the elements that best suit your needs and create an effect that is truly unique to your room. Snip the end off your extension cord. Strip the wire of its covering for the bottom 2 inches of the cord. You should have two separate wires. Remove the cap and covering from your light socket and thread the wire through the hole in the cap. Then twist the two wires around the screws on either side of the light fixture. Replace the cap and covering on the light fixture. Install a light bulb into the fixture. Secure your lamp shade to the upper part of the light fixture onto the covering that conceals the wires you just installed.
