How Do You Make A DNA Model Using Bread?
When the discoverers of DNA announced their research findings in 1957, they probably never envisioned the lengths to which teachers would go to get kids enthused about science. Maybe you were asked to make a DNA helix from wire and beads or colorful pipe cleaners. One website offers instruction on making a DNA spiral from candy (see Resources). There’s a more dentist-friendly recipe for fashioning a DNA model out of refrigerated bread dough. Expect to earn an A for originality and creativity. Pop open one or more cans of any type of refrigerated bread dough to start this project. Divide the bread dough into three sections: two will become the circular shape that outlines the spiral. Reserve the other third as material for covering toothpicks, which will become the “ladder” shapes on the DNA helix. Use your flour-covered hands to shape the first two sections of dough on a floured surface (prevents sticking). Shape each into a long snake of bread dough. Press a section of crafting wire d
