Foam core is an easy material to use for constructing a cornice box. It can easily be cut with a craft knife and is very lightweight. A cornice box provides the base for elegant and sophisticated window treatments. It consists of a front, top and two sides. Since no power tools are involved, they can be made easily by a novice decorator. Just measure, cut and glue. You will be so surprised at how easy the cornice boxes are to build, you will want to make one for all your windows. Step 1 Install your curtain rod. You will want it below the top of your window frame. Install the angle irons on the outside of your window frame and rod, even with the top edge. Step 2 Measure the width of your curtain rod. If the rod is on the window frame, measure to the outer edge of the window frame. Add 4 inches to this measurement to allow for an extra 2 inches on each side.
