You can add a custom look to a room by using cornice window valances. The look is stunning and easier to achieve than you may think. Measure and Cut the Wood Step 1 Start by measuring both the height and width of the window. Measure to the outside of the window frame if one exists. Use a stud finder to find the stud in the wall and mark the area where the hardware will be placed. Use a circular saw to cut a piece of plywood that is the width of the window and no more than 10 inches long. Additionally, cut two pieces of wood that are 5 inches wide by 10 inches long.
