Cut all of your dark fabric into 2 1/2-inch squares. Cut your light fabrics into strips 2 1/2 inches wide. Cut the center squares of the quilt blocks from a light fabric, making them 4 1/2 inches square. Sew together two random dark squares, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. This will create a rectangle 2 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches. Sew this rectangle onto one edge of the center square. This will be called side one. Sew three random 2 1/2-inch squares into a strip.
