How Do You Make A Coffee Cake With “Herman” Sourdough Starter?
This is one of my favorite “Herman” recipes. Smelling this cake cooking is like returning to the 1960’s. I would get the kids off to school, quickly straighten my homes and bake this coffee cake because two of my neighbors would be coming over for coffee at about 11:00. So enjoy baking this cake and have a few friends over for a “coffee clutch”. In a large bowl mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add starter, oil, egg, raisins and nuts. stir to mix well. Spread in a greased and floured 9 inch square baking pan. Make topping and sprinkle on top. To make topping: In a mixing bowl mix the packed brown sugar, flour and cinnamon. Cut in the butter (room temperature) until crumbly. Bake in a preheated 350 degrees oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a pick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool slightly in pan on a rack. Cut in squares. Best served warm.
