How Do You Make A Cheese Press?
A simple cheese press can be made from items already in your kitchen. If you are only beginning to experiment with making homemade cheese, this is a way to try out the process before spending a small fortune on a traditional cheese press. For any items you do not have, a trip to the thrift store or a lumberyard will get the supplies you need. Step 1 Remove both ends from the industrial size vegetable can. Use tin snips to cut four to six V-shaped notches in one end of the can. Step 2 Place a smooth-bottomed dinner plate upside down in the stock pot. This keeps the press from sitting in expelled whey. Step 3 Place the can, snipped side down, on top of the plate. Step 4 Line the can with the clean, thin cotton sheet. Cut away the portion of the sheeting that remains above the top of the can. Step 5 Fill the lined can with cheese curds. Fold the ends of the sheeting over the top of the curds. Step 6 Fill the jars with water and tighten a lid on each. Step 7 Place the smooth saucer on top
