Gravity holds it in place, up off the ground, to protect the parts that do the work. • Obtain a basic hinge with large plates on either side. You can get a new one or recycle one off of something else you dismantle. Either way, make sure there’s plenty of space for a hole that’s a bit bigger than the handle. • Drill or punch a large hole in one plate. If you can’t drill a hole that size or the metal is too thin, try a Greenlee punch or equivalent device. Make the hole bigger around than your handle. • Cut off the end of the hinge, if you wish. If it’s a large gate hinge with a long point, cut off the excess metal so that it does not protrude excessively. • Screw the other plate of the hinge firmly onto the wall so that the plate with the hole in it swivels out.
