Braided rugs are a folk craft that is experiencing a revival. They can be made of rags and left over fabric, or for a truly authentic and durable rug, they can be made of wool. Wool can be expensive to purchase, but there is plenty of inexpensive wool in the form of old clothing available at thrift stores and garage sales. Cut your fabric into 2 inch strips. Lay 3 strips on top of each other and sew together with the needle and lacing thread. Tie a loose loop on the sewn end and loop it over a doorknob or around a table leg to keep the fabric from twisting as you braid. Fold the sides of each strip inward then fold in half, securing the raw edge of the strips in the middle of the fold. Begin braiding the three strips together, folding as you go.
