A braided bow string is the sturdiest option for a long bow, and a well-constructed string can last for years with proper maintenance. You can make your own braided bow string if you follow these relatively simple guidelines. Measure out and cut the string. Cut three lengths, with about a foot extra on each. You will need this length since the braiding takes up string and also in order to tie loops at the ends. Secure one end of all three strings in the clamp (or vise). Braid using traditional braiding pattern: left string into middle, right string into middle, left string into middle, etc. Tie off the braid four inches from the end of the strings and secure the end to keep tension on the bowstring. Keep tension on the string for at least two hours until the braid has evened. Wax the bowstring using your fingers while it is still under tension.
