Because belly dance costumes are so expensive, many choose to make their own. Belly dance costumes are very colorful and may contain jewels, beads, coins or sequins to catch the stage light. The basic belly dance costume consists of a bra, belt, skirt and veil. Fold the satin fabric in half and cut it into two equal-sized pieces. Sew around the raw edge of both pieces of fabric using an overcast stitch. Match the fabric pieces inside out, and sew down the length on each side halfway down. The portion that is sewn all the way will become the top portion of your skirt. Make a waistband by folding the top portion of the fabric so there is a tube to insert elastic. Sew this down, leaving an inch unsewn to insert the elastic. Cut the elastic to fit your waist and insert into the waistband.
