Wind chimes can be made from ceramic pieces, metal tubing, or other materials, but for a natural look and mellow tone, bamboo is an excellent material to use. Here is a simple project of making a bamboo wind chime. • Find some bamboo. If you are lucky, bamboo grows wild in your area, and it is simply a matter of obtaining permission and cutting the proper size bamboo plant. If there is no local source, you may be able to purchase a common bamboo pole, used for fishing. Or, you can often find bamboo poles of varying sizes at garden supply stores. • Dead bamboo cut from local woods Make sure your bamboo is thoroughly seasoned and is not split or rotten. • Pieces of bamboo cut for chime tubes Cut the bamboo into six lengths composed of two of the plant’s sections, with one end above the partition-like segment end, and the other below it, so you have an open tube to work with. • Ends of bamboo split to create sound chambers cutting the bamboo in a vice Split the hollow end of each piece.
