It only takes a minute to properly maintain your horseback riding gear and it pays off in the long run. Besides, you get used to the fit of your old gear and new is hard to break in, so follow these steps to maintain your gear. Dust off your boots, chaps and hat after each riding session. Use a good quality saddle soap and sponge for cleaning your chinks or chaps and leather boots once a month. Work up a lather. Pay attention to the insides of the legs where they contact the horse. Rinse off soap with clear water. It doesn’t hurt to get leather wet as long as you are careful to oil it good after it dries. Oil every inch of clean leather with a high grade mink oil or Neatsfoot brand oil. If it soaks in right away and appears dry, oil it again.
