If you take the time to maintain your asphalt driveway, it can stay in top condition for many years. You don’t need to hire someone to do maintenance and repairs. If you have the proper materials and know the tricks of the trade, you can do it all yourself. Clean the driveway thoroughly before attempting repairs. Cracks, potholes and depressed areas in particular should be swept or vacuumed to get rid of loose debris. Using a powerful spray nozzle on your garden hose, rinse each repair site and the entire driveway thoroughly. Let the driveway dry before attempting to make any repairs. Fill small cracks with crack filler, larger cracks with patching compound and the largest cracks with cold-patch asphalt. Each of these products must be smoothed down to form a level surface with the driveway. A putty knife will suffice with the crack filler and patching compound, but cold-patch must be tamped down.
