How Do You Maintain A Steam Heating System?

We moved into our home a few months ago that, I believe, has a steam heating system. I had a plumber out here for something else and he mentioned that I would need to turn the boiler off, drain water and then add new water about once a month during the winter. I haven’t attempted to do anything because I am worried I will do it wrong. I just checked it and noticed that the water in the tube is running low. HELP!! I am looking for detailed steps on what I am doing, please.
