A metal flue pipe attached to the top of the water heater provides the safe release of these toxic gasses. Learn how to perform periodic maintenance to prevent trapped carbon monoxide gasses from leaking into your house. Determine that the flue assembly aligns correctly between the top of the water heater to the wall. The flue assembly must rise in an upward direction towards the chimney. Check the flue pipe for back draft. Hold your hand next to the draft diverter on the top of the water heater and feel for air flowing out.
