A clothes dryer doesn’t need a lot of maintenance, but what it does need is important if you don’t want to come home to a load of burnt laundry–or a burnt house. Following are steps for making sure to maintain your clothes dryer, keeping it free of lint where it collects and anything else that could be flammable. Clean the lint screen after every load. Wipe down the exterior of the dryer if anything spills on it and never use the top of the dryer to spray stain removers on clothes. Brush out the exhaust duct at least once a year (more often if you do a lot of laundry). You can buy your own lint brush and do the job yourself if the duct isn’t too long or you can pay a professional to do it for you. Chimney sweeps often also clean dryer ducts. Get a service call.
